No. 13 Chadron State College limited Western New Mexico to 102 yards, including -30 yards rushing, to defeat the Mustangs 43-17 Saturday in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Action. Chadron State improved to 6-1 for the season and 5-0 in the RMAC. It was CSC's 23rd consecutive conference victory; whereas the Mustangs remain winless in the 2008 season.
Chadron State was the first to get on the board with two 19-yard touchdown passes from Joe McLain to Isaac Stockton and Joel Schommer and a 29-yard field goal from Travis Atter, but the Mustangs tacked on ten unanswered points at the beginning of the second quarter when sophomore quarterback Chris Voller (Albuquerque, NM/Valley High School) (Albuquerque, NM) connected with John Means (Glendale, AZ/St. Mary's High School) (Glendale, AZ) for a touchdown, and Steve Flores (Peoria, AZ/Peoria High School) (Peoria, AZ) kicked a 20-yarder for three points.
It was nearly all Chadron from that point on. The Eagles posted two more field goals and three more touchdown passes.
The Mustangs closed the scoring when Erin Sharp (Tempe, AZ/Marcos de Niza High School) (Tempe, AZ) returned a Chadron State fumble 59 yards with 9:27 left in game.
WNMU finished the game going 1 for 13 on third-down conversations but was able to force four CSC fumbles and 15 CSC penalties for 126 yards.
The Mustangs return home next Saturday when they take on the University of Nebraska – Kearney Lopers at 12:00 noon.
